William Riley Thomas and his wife, Permelia Ellender Fortner
Thomas. We have been told that Permelia is buried at Davis
Cemetery in an unmarked grave. William Riley is buried
at Shiloh Cemetery in Cullman County. They are the great-great
grandparents of Asa Faith Randolph, Johnnie Farris and
Glenn Allen Bobo.
Permelia was the daughter of Ansel Fortner and Sally Rutherford.
Tradition has it that she was one-half Cherokee Indian,
but this has not been documented. She and William Riley
had 10 children, the oldest of which was James Allen Thomas.
Two of James Allen's sons, Austin and Charles, raised
families in Dora. Austin was the father of Fay Thomas
Bobo and four other daughters.
Another of William Riley and Permelia's sons, Riley Monroe
Thomas and his wife Sally Murphy Thomas, are also buried
at Davis Cemetery. Many Thomas descendants still live
in this area. The Thomas Family reunion is held in July
each year at the Dora Civic Center.
